Nicole and I had our only weekend getaway (48 whole hours away from our six children) since we had gotten together almost two years earlier -- and while driving back from Ojai I casually asked her, "Why aren't there more lesbian movies out there?" Her answer was long and complicated and I won't go into detail, but in any case I posed the challenge, "Well, why dont we give it a go?" Nicole loves to make films, and honestly I've always wanted to make them as well, and we're not getting any younger. Nicole sarcastically noted, "Yeah, I'll think about that, but just so you know the only story I'd like to tell at this point is our story and who wants to hear about two mid-life moms in a millenial Brady Bunch redux?" Well, if we actually put our life on screen, no one would buy it. We are the poster family for diversity smack dab in the heart of La Canada - same sex, disabled, ethnic, adoptive, step, democratic - we were surrounded by Yes on 8 and McCain signs, if you can believe it.
Anyway, within six days Nicole had banged out a rough draft of a story loosely based on us. See, we believe in the reality of soul mates. The fact that I was in my fifth decade, had been married for 11 years, was inordinately straight, with four kids of my own and had never even remotely entertained the idea of kissing a girl - and then fell head over heels in love with Nicole made me realize, this person, who happens to be a woman, is my soul mate.
We've hit many bumps in the road on the way through pre-production and shooting, each time thinking, OMG, what are we going to do now? Each time we have discovered that the challenge proved to make Elena Undone all the better. Those happy mistakes soon became our reality, and as Jane always sighs after a moment of despair, "Don't worry guys, all is as it should be." We soon became believers of the term that popped into Nicole's head one day as she was writing Tyler's character - Soulemetry - where the universe is full of happy mistakes and all is as it should be.
We hope you enjoy and celebrate with Nicole and I the true nature of love as we see it. It has been one of our greatest gifts and we look forward to sharing it with you.
Yours,
